Tankless Gas water heater
My water heater tank is 50 gal. size and is 19 yrs old its a Rheem, I keep on thinking it is going to blow-out soon and was thinking of replacing it with one of those Tankless water heaters that I saw at Home Depot, the name of it is PALOMA, I guess it has no holding tank or water storage to keep hot, it just heats the water directly as you use it. Has anyone had any experience with this type of water heater? or have anything positive or negative things to say about them? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Tankless Gas water heater
I have used several in houses I have worked on.

If you are alone in the house and use very little hot water - the tankless is the best way to go. If you need a lot of hot water, having the 50 gallons in a tank is better, as it will let the most people wash.

The downside is that most take quite a heavy duty electrical feed to operate, although they are getting better. The gas fired ones have in my opinion lost some attractiveness because the price of gas has gone so high.

Environmentally, I like the electric powered systems. I do not know if I would buy any brand carried by Home Depot, I might look for a higher quality - such as carried by Noland.

Thanks much KB, Iam going to check that brand out now, the only thing I do not quit understand is why does it matter if you have alot of people using the water? I was under the impression that if you use lots of water, it would be better to have a tankless heater? Or cant it keep up with the large amount of water, I have four adults taking showeres plus laundry, and it is fueled by Natural Gas.

Re: Tankless Gas water heater
When I'm considering a major purchase, I'll often go to goodle/groups...do a few keyword searches within the appropriate catagory (I'm sure there's a home improvement group) read several pages and see what real people have to say from their own personal experiences with types, brands, models, warranties and customer service.
I'm sure there are some other members who have found some really good sites that offer a way of comparison shopping and getting some customer reviews??

check out Rinnai, but I believe they are gas. 3 sizes $600-1300 but nice comparisons. Google for web site since we are not supposed to post site info here.

I have a good friend who has a Rinnai (sp?) and loves it. Endless hot water and his is gas fired. When he installed it several years ago he bragged about the hudge savings over his 45 gal. tank heater. It seems like it has to be better then keeping 45 gals of water hot 24/7, right?

I installed on water the original water heater decided to fall apart. KB is correct. If you do not have much demand, they are great.
if there is a lot of demand from a family, you will need more than one.

Re: Tankless Gas water heater
The best you will do for a reasonable price will be Bosch. The one I have works well.
