Is it just me?
Okay I know we ask all kinds of questions in this advice forum so I have a strange one for you. I am as so many of us at that age where our doctors want us to go for certain tests.I am really good about going to the doctor and doing all kinds of tests because of so much family history with so many things. I strongly push others to be proactive about their health as well.But now I have reached a point where I just can't follow my doctors request.
I was told to get a colonoscopy and had no issue with the thought of going for the test itself.I have had my son go through several of them as well as several other people in my life. I understand they are extremely important and again have no fear of the test.I researched and researched until I found what seemed to be a great doctor on paper.Now came the actual issue I was having so I started researching this....How can I do a prep that demands I drink something I just can't choke down. I don't mean I can't drink it all. I mean I can't drink any of it!
I have always been someone that gags at medication and things I don't like. I throw up at the thought of some medication. I have never been able to drink Nyquil liquid because I throw up the second it hits my lips.When I was pregnant and nauseous the doctor gave me a liquid medication to prevent nausea. I threw it up.I can't get a simple teaspoon of something I don't like down my throat how can I get the liquid they require . I am gagging just thinking about it.I have researched alternatives and just can't find any. I understand they had pills but they were recalled due to kidney and liver failure I believe.
So with all the medical advances we have they really don't have an alternative for this liquid prep? I find it amazing that they have a liquid version of something that they can't seem to convert to a pill version. I was even willing to do what most people would dread but found that things like enemas are no good because they only work for a small part of the body and not what what is needed. So even if they told me I would die tomorrow if I don't have this test, I just can't because I have no way to prepare for the test. How crazy is that?
Any advice? AND PLEASE DON'T TELL ME WAYS TO TRY TO DRINK IT I HAVE READ EVERY IDEA THERE IS. I CAN NOT DO IT. I am just wondering if there is a prep that I missed out there that does not include the drink in any way, even in small doses.

That's the funny thing I have no issue with that gag reflex or swallowing.Those are pleasurable things to me.lol
I do not eat anything that tastes bitter or has a texture that feels weird to me.I never drank alcohol because of the taste. I hate it. There are so few drinks I can tolerate the taste of. My son had me taste a beer that he said had no alcohol taste and was very sweet.He works in a place that makes a zillion types of beer. I touched it to my lips and gagged. It was so bitter to me. I am the same way with wine and I have a friend that is a huge wine collector and she has tried for years to find something I would even tolerate. I think my taste buds must be different because so many things taste so strong to me and I just can't tolerate it. Kam thinks I have the plainest taste in food. Yet I love sweet things.Although I wont eat sweet cereal. I cook and bake almost anything but wont eat most of it. I could live on things like cheerios or shredded wheat or even matzo or oatmeal and be fine with that. I will eat basically meat and potatoes and be fine with that. Most vegetable can't get past my lips because of taste and texture. They are bitter and have odd textures. Two of my kids wont eat anything that has a texture that bothers them either.If I swallow a pill and happen to taste it I throw up. It took me years to get to be able to take a pill without throwing up. Occasionally it still happens.I know I am not the only person that is like this. It really became an issue when I had to take any medication in my life. I honestly would have rather died than tried to choke down any medication for most of my life. When I had my accident and they said I needed to swallow a pill I thought I was doomed to be in a wheel chair because I couldn't do it.It took a long time and many months of me throwing up every time I tried before I was able to just keep some down.Thank god they have patches for pain now.Although I can swallow pills these days I still have to get in the right frame of mind every time to do it. And I have to take a lot of pills every day.....Liquids are something I can't get past because there is no way to by pass them hitting your tongue completely.

I had trouble keeping the dye-drink down too. And the guy giving it to me said when I started gagging. It's okay we will just keep giving it to you til you keep it down. Finally, he got me a straw and that helped because I didn't have to taste it. Good luck.

No this isn't the dye drink Jen. This is the prep for a colonoscopy. Its horrid! I can't take any of these drinks. I can't swallow a teaspoon of meds without throwing them up if I don't like the taste. I have never been able to drink Nyquil or a shot either. The only shot I ever got down was blackberry brandy. I actually got drunk on that (One of the very few times in my life) I threw up and never able to even smell it without getting sick since. I gag at the smell of Sambuca or Anisette as well. It was interesting when I was a bar tender .lol You don't even want to see what happens if I taste peach or grapefruit juice. Lets just say there better be a garbage real close! I had a bar back switch my juices when he filled them once. It was not pretty when I took a big gulp and discovered it was grapefruit juice instead of orange juice.I made sure my juices were filled by me from then on. I wanted my containers emptied and cleaned and I filled them all myself.It's hard to look hot even wearing high heals and a body suit when you are puking your guts up behind the bar because they gave the wrong fucking juice! I was pissed. He said it was the earlier bar tender on that station because he thought I was going to kill him. I really didn't care who did it I just knew it could never happen again.
The funny thing is I have a strong stomach when it comes to blood and stuff like that but not this stuff. I also can't watch someone else get sick. My kids all knew if they were getting sick to close the bathroom door and tell me to stay out. How sad is that. But they could be bleeding all over and I had no problem with that. I have seem many big open wounds with no problem at all.I even helped the doctor remove my daughters chest tube after her open heart surgery.

I found a few things that really helped
Chill the drink down as low as you can as it dulls the taste.
Have a glass of ginger beer/ale anything strong that you like the taste of next to you and sip that alongside it
Have a mint in your mouth and suck the drink through a straw over the mint. Stops the taste hitting your tongue and what does tastes of mint
There are different drinks and some are easier than others. Doc can usually give you the best one for you
Been through this a lot and it bites! But - worthwhile honey xx

Thanks but I gave up I spoke to several doctors and they all said the stuff that they used to give people who couldn't drink that crap got pulled off the market so I will just wait until they come up with another option.I was only going because of my age not that I was having any problems. I go for every other test I am supposed to. This will just have to be one I don't for now.
