Re: gairdia
Fish/aquarium suppliers sell antibiotics and parasite meds. They are a high pharmaceutical grade (Same meds sold to humans through a pharmacy)

Over the years I've bought my tapeworm meds for my cats through the same guy on ebay, he's great, he gives clear detailed instructions on proper dosing for any animal you need the meds for. I buy my antibiotics the same way or from a local feed store.

The stuff can be expensive so many of the ebayers are buying large stock and then breaking it down into smaller affordable amounts for people who just need one course of the meds.

As with buying anything from ebay, of course check out the seller's ratings.

I'll private message you with the guy's name that I buy from,

Re: gairdia
I believe that Shoprite and Walmart and many others are offering many of these meds at low cost or even free. I believe you can try going to Petco and seeing the vet there through Luvmypet and they can write the script or give you the meds. I know around here there are several cat rescue places that can head you in the direction of low or no cost for many things like this. Let us know how things work out please. NO Offense Chazzy but the buying internet meds from a person on Ebay scares the hell out of me and I know people that have had cats die from doing that. Many of those guys are not legitimate as you are well aware. So please only do that as a last resort.

No, not offended newb, I'm intelligent enough to safely and confidently navigate the internet and make purchases.
I'm not at all scared to do that. I am certainly not the (um hum) "stupid redneck" that someone has remarked that I am.
Gawd, that is so offensive to rednecks, really it is.

I've spent 8 years on a farm and the last 10 I've been rescuing and caring for cats. A few I've adopted out but the majority of the happy healthy felines still reside with me.

Now back to what is really important. I know from speaking with ash over time that a vet has diagnosed the kitty with gairdia and metronidazole is the medication for this parasite and metronidazole is what the vet wants prescribed. Treating a cat with metronidazole needs a bit more caution because the manufactures of the drug metronidazole admit that they may not know of all the possible effects the drug may have on cats.
I've treated many cats (mine and others) with Praziquantel so I'm very confident and familiar with that dosage and all factors to consider. Metronidazole for cats is trickier, must not only consider age and weight but other health factors since metronidazole can affect the liver in some cats.

The best course of action is of course to let a vet take care of this, but I do so understand there are times when this is not possible. My last vet office visit cost $55.
It is not uncommon to find the vet recommended medication via the internet and treat your pet yourself as opposed not being able to afford the vet and letting the animal go untreated. A prescription may be required to purchase a "cat" dose in pill form but the exact same medication can be purchased without a prescription through an aquarium supply store and you will have to carefully measure the dose yourself.

I have a pretty good at home "vet clinic and pharmacy" just in case. I keep certain common meds on hand and a variety of tools for measuring and administering and I have a supplier who also has an ebay storefront, a good reliable trustworthy competent seller with a the highest rating with who I have been getting supplies from for nearly 7 years now. Very high quality stuff, much better than the China manufactured pills found at specialty pet shops. My cats are very healthy and my vet is always aware of any home treatments and where I buy them.

So Ash, to break it down...metronidazole is better dosed by a vet who has done the blood-work and exam and knows all the factors need to make the correct and effective dose for you kitty.

If you buy in pill form, it can be such a bitch to get a pill down a cat's throat, some are worse than others, some dosage may end up wasted trying to get in it to them so you may end up buying more. If they don't get the full dose they may need to be re-dosed two weeks later.

Ash, need to ask, has your cat already been given a course/dose of fenbendazole or other de-wormer?

Re: gairdia
Yeah, I remember when we talked before, that the vet didn't seem to be following up like they should.
There's a vet five minutes away from my house, but I don't like them at all, so if I need a vet...I drive 30 miles down the road to a vet that is just fantastic.

Part of a vet's training is to always offer two options, first the do all and everything regardless of cost, and the second option is to do the least and cheapest because vets do/should understand that the first option is not affordable to most folks.

If you got that gut feeling about the vet, yeah...find another one.

Re: gairdia
I have had good and bad vets and since I have had the cats I have not found a vet I feel comfortable with. My cats are very gentle and sweet but have seen them react to some vets like they were fighting for their lives. I have to admit when it comes to medical issues dogs were MUCH easier to deal with. I always got them to take the meds, shots or anything else they needed with little problems if any. I had to give these cats liquid meds and I swear I wore more of it than they swallowed.

How do you get cats to take meds. Liquid or pills? I tried the mixing it with food, They would not eat it. I tried putting it on their paw they would not lick it off. I tried squirting it in the back of the throat as told to do by a vet. Do I really even have to say how that worked out? I told my cats they are not allowed to ever get sick from now on!

Does anyone know about the flea and tick drops for cats. The one I wanted to use was prescription only and just too expensive. The others vary in price drastically. I was also told by the companies themselves, (Yes I called them)to be careful because many places claiming to sell their products are not getting them from the company and can't promise you would get the real product. This is why it scares me so much. Especially with cats.I always had large dogs. Many things that could make a large dog ill could kill a small animal like a cat. So how do I know what flea and tick drops to get? How do I know the dose is correct? How do I know its safe for my cat? How do I even know if the store I buy it from is getting it legitimately? Even our own pharmacies are known to have at least 20% bootleg medications these days. Not because they are trying to but rather because they can't tell the real from the fake anymore.I am overly cautious I know but I could not forgive myself if I give the cats something that turns out to hurt or kill them.Is there a safe way to buy cat meds and check them out? I have never had to do it before so I don't know.

Chazzy, I was not saying that everyone on the internet sells bad stuff. I was just saying it scares me because I have no idea of how to check them out and that I have heard horror stories. For the record expired meds are not even that much of a concern. I have had enough doctors and pharmacists say that in most cases expired meds are just not as strong as the fresh and most pills can be used for 2 years after their expiration date with real benefits and no danger.Liquids are different. But I like being able to go back and exchange something and also be face to face with person if there is a problem, when it comes to certain types of purchases.

Yeah, the pills I usually crush up, and depending on what med it is, mix it with a little milk or water, put in an eye dropper or syringe and with all the cats I've cared for I'm really good at getting every bit of it down their throats very fast the first time all by myself.

Since I do it with an eyedropper/syringe, I'd rather buy the powder form. The Pills have extra ingredients to bind them so they can be formed into pills. I rather just use the powder form.

Newb, you don't have the link for the vet I buy from on ebay that I sent to ash privately, he's good, real good.

Re: gairdia
I have only purchased from ebay twice and it was years ago. I don't know much about it or how they check the real from fake or good from bad. I know my son uses ebay but don't think ever for meds for the pets . I didn't even think you were allowed to sell stuff like that on there. The internet is changing so fast. I know I can order meds online with a script or from other countries without for some but I know the people that do order say they are ordering from pharmacies that were licensed. Does it work the same with ebay and pet meds? I know some shelters or rescues down here are trying to help so many pets that are now homeless and to get them meds . I know they get many from vets or companies that make the meds as a donation.I have no idea other than a pharmacy or vet how to get meds for pets. I have had problems with meds in general through even well known pharmacies. They really need to be checked out. I have gotten wrong meds or wrong doses. Screwing up meds in general makes me nervous. I know a little animal is so susceptible to a mistake just due to their size. I double and triple check everything with them. It's just like when my kids were little, everything can effect them. I am a huge animal lover as you are and when I don't know about something it frustrates me so I research it to death until I am armed with as much information as possible.I've only had cats for about 3 years now, so still learning about them. Dogs I have had and was a breeder so I know a lot about them.

I just hope that everyone checks who they get anything like that from. Even if it is a local vet it is smart to check everything. It is great that there are low cost options out there. To many animals get put down or turned out because people can't afford to give them what they need. It's so sad.

Re: gairdia
The vet I buy from has had his ebay account for over 11 years and has a 100% rating, he's a stickler about the quality and the expiration dates. He states in his ads that if you aren't sure, then don't order.

Quality is excellent, far better than the pills I've bought from a national pet shops and top name mail order.

Many of us don't live within driving distance of a Petsmart type of store, I wouldn't buy from them anyway, the powder form I order online from this vet is a much better quality. Farm folk know how to take care of our pets and livestock ourselves.

Newb, if medicating your pets yourself is something you're scared to do then take your cat to a vet. If anyone is scared to buy the meds and treat their pets, go to a vet.

Fenbendazole is a safe wormer for cats for the giardia parasite. Ash, you can purchase it from the vet whose link I sent you, or you can buy it from a mail order vet pharmacy.

He is really good at answering mail and questions.

For powder meds, I use an eyedropper with the rubber bulb.
I measure out a dose, then mix it with a half an eyedropper or so of milk in a cup. I remove the rubber bulb and using a small funnel pour the mix into the rubber bulb part then replace the tube part. That way I know I get the whole dose in the eyedropper. I even cut the tip of the eyedropper a little so the stuff quirts out quicker.

Re: gairdia
well mixing meds with water or milk don't work so well with me, think i had more on the cats then in, had to wash the wife Christmas's table smucked it up ,so the best i found for mixing meds in was cat food with gravy and or food that's just mushy, babe gets wise to me , but if i mix it with gravy she ,they all lick it up , the two girls leave the meat, then blacky finishes it off. he needs it anyway, been to days now since i seen anything in the box, and no squirts is a very good sign.

newbie try the dry bath stuff, its nice and minty smelling and easy to apply as the aerosol stuff freaks the cats out to kill bugs, and its good for dander too

and i keep telling them kitty's dont like ginger snaps .....
