Whatever games are being played if one person needs to escape for ANY reason, they need to able to stop the game. An uncommon word is a simple device to say I’m done and I mean it.

Never leave you partner trapped and alone.
Even though the likelihood of a disaster is low. Being in a house fire, when you're bound to something immovable, is not exactly what most people think of as exciting.

Mood lighting can be hazardous.
Open flames can ignite most anything. And odds will be your not paying attention to them during game time. Low wattage colored lights can set the mood nearly as well.
If you looking to play with hot wax, use a candle made of wax with a low melting point. Not all wax is made the same. Start with a candle, that when lit, melts into a message oil.

Cotton rope and standard handcuffs work.
If you can find it cotton rope works well. It doesn't burn and chafe as much when you move and struggle. Silk, nylon, and other material can rub the skin raw in a good struggle and they can tighten to a point of near impossibility to untie and cutoff circulation. Also you can buy prefab bondage cuffs with Velcro straps.

Whips and canes can hurt like hell.
As cool as bullwhips sound, they can tear the skin in a hurry in inexperienced hands. So can heavy leather floggers. Canes cause welts fast without a lot of effort. Start with something lighter. Suede floggers, riding crops, and fur covered paddles can be used with varying force without the specter of permanent damage.

Ice can burn.
If left in one place to long ice can have the same effect as heat. Move it often. You can also hold it in your mouth and let the melting water drip and travel. People will squirm from cold water nearly as fast as an ice cube. Glass and metal dildos have come a long way and retain heat and cold.

Have a charged cell(if someone goes overboard), A knife or scissors to escape knots in case of emergency.

It’s more about control than pain.
