MusicMatch Jukebox
For some reason, this quit working for me. Now, a couple of weeks ago, I did remove some things that I didnt use, or junk that was attached to other downloads. I did go into my Control Panel to Add/Remove programs. I figured I could just remove it and download it again, but it wont let me. I've also Googled "latest version of" and tried to see if I couldnt upgrade somehow and each time I do, it tells me that I have a newer version already installed. I'm pretty sure that this was something that was pre-loaded by Dell when I bought it and I'm running XP. I spent the better part of the weekend looking for ways to fix it, but nothing seems to work. Anybody have any ideas?

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
Just so you understand , when you remove things it doesn;t mean you remove everything. It still could have things in your registry. I would not mess with that stuff unless you really know what your doing.

Did you "search"for the program on your computer? Did you just delete the icon or the program? To many questions for me figure out over this. Maybe a more computer savy person like Moant can help you.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
Hey Newbs. Yeah, to everything you asked. I tried using Windows Media Player instead to move some audio files on to CD. I would get them in there, (saw them, heard them) and when I went to hit "burn" several of them were no longer there. Not only that, but it wouldnt burn the ones that were still there. Ive used both of these many times before, so its not as though I'm doing something wrong. It almost makes me think that it may just be that my computer is old, but the only real problems I seem to have are with these 2 programs.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
Just being old shouldn't be it. It's to hard for me to figure out with out it being in front of me. Sounds like something is missing. Maybe when you deleted what you did it removed a shared file of some type. I have seen that happen several times.Sometimes it will warn you but not always. Wish I could help but sounds like you need the tech people to help with this. I will mention it to my son if I get to talk to him later and see if he has any clues as to what to do without looking at it.If he has time to talk to me that is.lol He is in the middle of about 5 things today with deadlines on all.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
Sometimes best to go "uninstall" than to the add/remove programs.
Sometimes, you have to do a bit of searching. "Removing MusicMatch" does turn up quite a few results, and what little I glanced at, there are some common problems with removing it.

Aside from mooant, JesseJames can be a huge help with these kinds of things too.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
AAAAAH.... I didn't want to get dragged into this one... Way too many possibilities and I only know one surefire fix that you're not going to want to do...

Programs can be so reliant on each other at times, it just shows the fallacy of the Windows operating system. Basically, whenever you install a program, it puts a list of all its files in a special list to keep track of where they all are. Sometimes, when you install additional programs that use the same exact file, they just redirect to use that file instead of installing another copy of it. When you deleted the programs you weren't using, I suspect you also checked off a message that said something along the lines of "Delete files that could be associated with other programs?" Which will delete the files that that program installed, but other programs might be using. Obviously a bad thing to do if you're not sure what you're doing.

There are two main solutions for this, neither are particularly pretty...

1. Search out every trace of the Musicmatch program and manually delete it. Its not just deleting all the files manually, but also hunting through something called the Registry and deleting all references to Musicmatch as well. The Registry is basically a variable storage center, programs can store temporary values into the registry to look up when the program loads, if it needs to load when the computer starts, the CD-Key of the program, how long the trial is left, or any other relevant information on how to run the program that is necessary for interaction with other programs. Deleting things in the registry will keep the computer from going "you already have a better version" but if you delete the wrong things, you'll force your hand into option 2, as the computer will basically be fucked.

2. Format the computer. Reload everything that you want, start with a nice clean slate, and no issues of bad software interactions. Just make sure to update everything to the newest version and backup your files beforehand.

(Anyone else notice that almost every software related issue ends with option 2 as my main suggestion?)

Yep, I like the reformat option for myself. Will try a restore first though.

Messin' with the registry....oh boy...

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
Does MusicMatch itself has an uninstall option? There's often a file in the home directory for the Programme. If you can run that it will basically do what Mooant is advising, but in a "fairly safe" way.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
Yeah, what wandering said, is what I've always been taught, go for the uninstall over the add/remove for a safer and cleaner result.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
1st, thank you for all the advice
Moant: That registry thing scares the hell outta me, mostly because I dont know what Im doing with it
Star: No, there is no uninstall function
Chazzy: I dont see any "format" function. I did try to do a "restore" but it popped a window open that says that only an administrator can perform this, which I have no idea who the hell the administrator would be since its my computer and I'm the only one who uses it.
I hate when things are smarter than I am

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
When I try to open it, a window opens that says:

"This application has failed to start because PC.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"

Does that make any more sense?

I'm assuming that when he deleted a bunch of programs, he damaged this functionality... Musicmatch is very easy to damage, despite how good of a program it is.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
To find the "format" function, open "my computer" click on the drive, like C drive, right click for a menu item that says "format"

Goes without saying I guess, you do this after you move any files you want to keep to another drive.

Gawd, it's been so long since I've done this myself, someone chirp in here...do you need to reload the OS after a format?

"Format C:" is absolutely the last resort, especially these days when most systems have a far less dramatic recovery option. I wouldn't consider this option unless the OS itself was broken.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
HOLD ON!!!
Free take a deep breath. Relax for a minute.
Reformatting your computer for someone that has never done it can scare the hell out of them. You would be wiping your computer clean and reinstalling everything you want as if it is a new computer. Personally I like doing it every year or so on an old computer to keep it running nice but I don't recommend this lightly to others.
I know there are times at least with the older Windows systems you can reinstall windows without actually doing a reformat. To be honest it sometimes causes problems and not even sure if you can do it with some of the newer versions. I would definitely NOT do these things if your not very comfortable with computers.

Stay out of your registry unless you really know what your doing! If you have a good friend that can walk you through how and what to do them maybe. But you can totally fuck things up if you do the wrong thing.

Sometimes a simple reinstall (IF POSSIBLE)of the program is a simple fix but doesn't always work. Honestly I would most likely try that.

DUMB Question here but did you try going into your system and doing a "restore" to the date prior to the changes?

Unfortunately a problem like your having has many possible fixes its a matter of finding what works and the easiest route. Hard to do over a forum like this.

You should be the admin of your system. Is it asking for a password ?(If my mind remembers this right)just try typing "admin". If your not the admin.... Who set up your computer?

Sometimes there are other ways to add back a missing dll file. I wish you were closer I could get this fixed so easily for you.DAMN Buffalo is so far. lol

If all else fails drop your computer from a minimum of a three story window and go buy a Mac!

Mooant: You like windows why again? lol

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
Missing or damaged dlls are a bitch as I recall from a few years back.

Yeah, every year or couple years, we reformat. There are registry clearners available, but never heard of one working with no residual pains.

(Re)formats are allot simplier now, move and store the files you wanna keep, maybe have someone walk ya through it.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
5tar is good, no doubt...I tried helping hubs replace the dlls on one of his programs on his computer. We just ended up doing the reformat. Formating use to be such a total bitch doing it by discs.

Ocassionally, if we're going for a total complete hardrive clean, we write to zeros and then reinstall the OS.

I'm not a expert - Hell I forgot most of what I knew - but I think you can pop in your Windows CD and choose to fix an existing Windows System? If I remember it was one of the first few windows that pop up with you choose to install. Sorry I 'm not of more help but it's been a while since I've messed with Windows. You could always get a copy of Ubuntu Linux which is free OS - great if you are primarily using your computer on-line as it is way safer

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox

I assume you can't start up Windows at all? If boot from the Windows install CD you can use the repair console and enter basic DOS commands to check disk. It may fix broken or missing files

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
Windows 2000 and Windows XP recovery console chkdsk syntax

Note: The below options are only available in the recovery console.

Checks a disk and displays a status report.

chkdsk [drive:] [/p] | [/r]
[drive:] Specifies the drive to check.
/p Check even if the drive is not flagged dirty, bad.
/r

Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /p).

Chkdsk may be used without any parameters, in which case the current drive is checked with no switches. You can specify the listed switches.

Chkdsk requires the Autochk.exe file. Chkdsk automatically locates Autochk.exe in the startup (boot) directory. If it cannot be found in the startup directory, chkdsk attempts to locate the Windows 2000 Setup CD. If the installation CD cannot be found, chkdsk prompts for the location of Autochk.exe.

Examples

chkdsk

Will display all information described above and also report any crossed linked files.

chkdsk /f

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
So if you can get into the repair consul all you need to do is type this exactly.

At the curse you should be in the C:/ which is your C drive. if not just type CD C:/ - I think that will get you there!

then at the C:/ type

CHKDSK /F

Hit enter and let it run. Note the space after CHKDSK and the /F it needs to be there

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
Thanks JJ - here's the update. I finally was able to remove the original program. All gone, good bye. Reloaded MusicMatch Jukebox from CNet, and when I would click to open it, it would open the page - and then shut down. Uninstalled that and reinstalled another version and the same shit is happening. All Im trying to do is take some home studio recordings (mp3 and WAV files) and burn them to a CD. Ive done this plenty of times before and always found that MusicMatch was a quick and easy way to do it, but this is getting ridiculous. And I tried using Windows Media Player, but that was a pain in the ass too. Im not married to MusicMatch, so maybe I should be looking for a different program?

Since everything we delete and edit is copied and pasted in the Moderators area, we can forward those links from one non-VIP to another if you request it.

However, we will not pass personal messages and contact info between non-vips, ya'all understand how that just wouldn't be right.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
If you're just trying to burn a CD, you can do it easily through Windows Media Player, which is on every computer out there that has Windows on it. If that doesn't work, your system is a lot more fucked up than we've been lead to believe.

I can't answer for you how to do a format on your computer, as it is something that is different and unique to each model of computer. Your best bet to find out how would be to navigate the support pages of your computer manufacturer's site to find your specific computer for instructions. Keep in mind this will delete EVERYTHING so back up what you want to keep.

I also can't answer specific questions on how to repair the software, as the situation your in is fairly unique and really depends on what you've specifically done to your computer. Without physically being at your computer, I can't see the extent of the damage done to fix it for you (I'm not setup to do virtual diagnostics, nor will I bother to setup my computer in that manner).

Best future advice, don't uninstall programs unless you know what you're doing. If you're just trying to free up memory by removing programs you no longer use, your best option is to adjust the options of the specific program so it does not load when the computer starts up.

Re: MusicMatch Jukebox
Damn Free if that's all that your having an issue with then that's easy. lol

Don't let all the tech stuff get you rattled it just sounds harder than it really is. The problem is you have to many people giving you different advice. Many times there can be more than one solution.A missing dll file can drive you crazy at times especially if it effects several programs. Getting it back isn't that hard but then again algebra isn't hard if you know what your doing.

There are many programs that let you burn MP3's it's just a matter of preference and compatibility so I wont advise you on that. They do range from very basic to extremely complex. I have no idea where you would fall into that. Maybe ask around and see what others that burn a lot of original music like and use in a system with the same operating system as yours. The stuff my kids use is mostly on the professional side but I can ask what they recommend to friends and clients that is more user friendly if you would like, But I need to know what OS your using and what you are trying to do.If you are talk JUST burning and no editing or anything else I know that will be easy. there are programs that do much more but I don't think that's what you want.
