Is social media making us less social?
I still make phone calls and send cards. If I'm at lunch and my friend is paying more attention to their phone, I'll just grab the phone and pitch it across the room.

Re: Is social media making us less social?
Too right. It's gotten totally out of hand. Social media has effectively killed the social life. In China especially, it is a vital organ for humans to survive. Even my wife is so typical of them and sleeps with her handset, eats and shits with it. I cannot for the life of me, fathom how a 6" piece of aluminium & glass can absorb them more than the real beauty and people that surround them? The streets are full of people here fixated on their screens as they walk not looking and I used to veer round, but not anymore. If they stray into my path within inches I shout 'oiy' and with a shocked expression, they suddenly return from what ever planet they were on, then look at me as if I am at fault. No one talks on buses, no conversations on trains and everyone adopts the praying position with head bowed. Not just youngsters, old people too are just as obsessed. Gone is the day of the peasant stood on the corner with begging bowl needing spare coins. I haven't used cash here for years, nor seen any. Everything is WeChat Pay. The beggars now have a QR code tag around their necks. I have to carry my iPhone as it is the only form of payment and although my Chinese has progressed, their dialect here can be confusing so need it for translation. A part from that, it stays firmly planted in my pocket and take in the real life around me and preferably talk to the person next to me, once I get their attention away from their screen.

I had to use Google maps to find my way home the other day….I couldn’t trust my horse because she was in heat, and smelled the wild horses over a ridge. Mares in heat and cell phones….WTF?

Re: Is social media making us less social?
I expect syb's reception was as good as mine when I bought my first cell phone in 1986. It cost me around $2000, which was shed loads back then. The early Racal-Vodac's came with a huge battery the size of a cement block. Attached to this was a curly cable on to which was fitted a massive handset. No messaging, no texting, just make and receive calls. I suppose by today's standard it makes them eco-friendly, as you couldn't waste half your life looking at pointless media. The major problem with the technology in them days was that transmitter antenna were about 10 miles a part and the red, 'No Service' light was on most of the time. Clasping a battery the size of a cars and trying to use one on horseback must be as hard as a Rodeo... Yee-haa!
